Ceramic tiles are one of the oldest building materials known to man, the ancients had homes built with tiles. Even today tiles are one of the best materials for use on your kitchen and bathroom floor and wall. Even with all of our modern technology we really haven't come up with a better flooring material.
The most common use for ceramic tiles is as a flooring material. The main reason that you would want to use ceramic tiles on a floor is because of their durability. Properly installed ceramic tiles will last decades without any problem. Ceramic tiles also have the advantage of being water resistant, which helps to make your floor more durable since water won't leak through the tile and cause the wood underneath it to rot. Being water resistant also makes tiles very easy to clean anything spilled on them can be mopped up very easily. This makes them ideal for the kitchen or the bathroom where there is a good chance that liquids will be spilled on the floor.
Ceramic tiles are also widely used on the walls in kitchens and bathrooms for the same reason that they are used on the floor, they don't absorb water and they are easy to clean. They also tend to get used on kitchen counters where there resistance to water has yet another advantage, they help to prevent the spread of germs. Since anything spilled on the counter will not be absorbed the germs don't penetrate into the counter like they wood with other materials and that makes them easier to clean.
Ceramic tiles can be purchased in a wide variety of colours, shapes and sizes giving you lots of decorating options. Since tiles are applied individually you can mix and match different tiles in order to create any design that you want on your floor or your wall. This gives you the opportunity to make your kitchen or bathroom unique and reflect your own style.
Ceramic tiles have the additional advantage of being fairly inexpensive, especially given how durable they are. Tiles probably won't be the cheapest option available but they are usually competitive in price with other materials. Given that ceramic tiles will last for decades they are usually good value for the money when it comes to installing them.
The one downside of ceramic tiles is that they can be a bit of a hassle to install. Installing tiles is definitely a skill, but it is one that most people can learn with a little bit of practice. Even so it will take more time and effort to install tiles than it would to install other flooring or wall materials. If you hire somebody to do it the cost is usually pretty steep because of the time involved.
